Black and white

Saturday, 14 May 2011

After what seems like an eternity, we've finally managed to lay our hands on an original model 420C side chair by Harry Bertoia.  We didn't plump for a shiny new chair from a fancy shop, oh no!  Rather, we decided to rescue this forlorn and generally unloved looking chair which, as you can see, is in desperate need of some TLC.  This baby has, at some point, been sprayed white and sadly left to go a little rusty around the edges.  But with the 'new' paintwork chipped in places, there are small glimpses here and there of the original black vinyl-coated finish.

  1. Forlorn and unloved is the way I like my chairs too. The end result is always satsfying. x

  2. Yes, we're looking forward to seeing this chair transformed to its former self .... but in the meantime we still have a great chair to sit and stare at!

I can't wait to see it after the renovation...

    Good luck with it.

  4. MidCenturyHome: Ha! The chair has now been shot-blasted, just have to decide on the colour ..... black or white?

  5. So was this actually vinyl coated under the paint? I recently bought 17 original Robin Day polo chairs and the bases are vinyl coated, pretty thinly and in poor condition, but my local shot blasters said they couldnt strip them? Where did you get yours stripped? Thanks James

  7. James: Our mistake - it was powder-coated originally, although finding a shot-blaster that would work with a previously power-coated finish proved tricky. Drop us an email (chairsmith@mail.com) if you want further details.

Tonia: A trade? What did you trade, pray tell!
