three

Saturday 31 March 2012

There are just three things we like in this photo set - the RAR, the Franco Albini ottoman and the Brutalist wall sculpture - who knew?

walkies

The wonderfully named 'Take a Line for a Walk' by Alfredo Häberli draws on the idea of cocooning and motherly comfort.  Yes please!

teardrops

Tuesday 27 March 2012

Take two iconic chairs designed by Hans Olsen for Frem Rojle, add a dash of Eleanor Young of Fun Makes Good, and what you end up with is something quite unexpected.  These beautifully re-worked pieces have been re-upholstered in a teardrop design - reflecting the chairs natural curves - using a patchwork of blue-hued vinyl in keeping with the chairs original vinyl covering.  We love the originality of the design and the complementing colour palette ...... how about you?

happy hour

Friday 23 March 2012

We thought it was just chairs, but it turns out it's stools too.  After featuring some stunning vintage bar stools by Harry Bertoia a week or two ago, we've been on the hunt for bar stool, bar stools, bar stools - and no, we still haven't got the bar sorted out!  These delightful 1950s bar stools designed by Frank Guille for Kandya in 1957 tick all the right boxes - from the plastic-coated steel frames to the laminated beech back rails . Chuck in some black vinyl - oh, and did we mention they're British too - and the drinks are on us!

stitch up

Wednesday 21 March 2012

What, another beautiful arm?  We need to get a grip.  Wait.  No we don't.  Here's another beautiful arm  - this time from Saarinen's iconic Womb chair - which details some pretty nifty handiwork in the stitching department.

red alert

Tuesday 20 March 2012

It's been a while since we've done a 'chairs at home' post, mainly because everything we come across has already been done to death elsewhere.  So whilst we were scouring the interweb for something we hadn't set eyes on before, it was the pops of vibrant red scattered amongst this Scandinavian modern apartment that made us go 'oooo'.  Oh, and the Lamino ..... double 'oooo'!

We're not really ones for cute and cuddly, but this Danish teak dining chair is a really sweetie ..... awwwwww!

This image had us pondering how our shell may have looked before ending up at the chairsmith hospital for some cosmetic surgery!

Monday 12 March 2012

We found ourselves marvelling at these wonderful photos by dosbananos at the weekend and, as with all photos by dosbabanos that we find ourselves ogling over, they always do the chair in question the utmost justice.  And these shots are no exception ..... just take a few wire side chairs by Charles and Ray Eames - snap, snap, snap-a-de-snap - and voilà.

seeing red

Thursday 8 March 2012

We normally do the talking bit first and then leave you with the pictures, but this chair knows how to make an entrance and so we're happy to make an exception!  We spotted this gem over on Olive & Joy sometime ago now and it blows us away each time we look at it.  The shape ticks all the right boxes and the exposed frame is particularly pleasing, especially when viewed from the side.  With its red wool upholstery, those polished brass tips to the legs and the beautiful tone of the wood, this chair is, without doubt, a firm favourite.

Tuesday 6 March 2012

Have black, need white.  As well.   Is that asking too much?  Just one.  Please.  Pretty please.  We've been good.  Really, really good.

horny

Monday 5 March 2012

We popped along to North London Vintage Market on Saturday afternoon - to browse you understand, nothing more, nothing less. We thought we'd left our chairsmith hat at home, but it appears that wherever we go the chairsmith hat goes too, as, after much deliberation and ooh-ing and aah-ing - OK, OK, it didn't take much - we walked away with a quite delightful Ercol rocking chair beautifully made from elm and beech and classic Ercolani.  Now, whilst putting together this post we've realised we've still to unload our booty from the back of the car (ooops), so here are some super pics of someone else's delightful Ercol rocker - this one is a Cowhorn rocker and it's a beauty don't you think?

bear essentials

Friday 2 March 2012

We're usually immune to all forms of marketing material, but this brochure appears to be talking to us. 'You owe yourself the pleasure of relaxing in this outstanding piece of handcrafted furniture' - um, yes, yes, we do.  'For people of discriminating contemporary taste' - yeap, that's us, that's us!  So, it would appear we need a Pappa Bear.  Who knew!

unscientific

Thursday 1 March 2012

In 1946, when Eero Saarinen designed a curved shell, the science in plastic was still in it's infancy and the inability to obtain smooth surfaces meant that said curved shell had to be masked with foam rubber and upholstery*.  So there you have it - lack of scientific know-how = Womb chair.  Who knew?  Here are two unscientific examples for you to enjoy!
