Ah, there's never a dull moment here at chez chairsmith. OK, OK, so chairs chairs chairs could be classed as pretty dull, but hey, this ain't no ordinary chair, oh no! This is the 'Dolphin' long chair by Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara for Skanno, c. 1955. Made of oak, this lounger reminds us of an aged piece of gymnasium equipment with its beautifully coloured wooden base and aperture 'handles'. Lifting the lounger allows its plastic wheels to make contact with the floor - so there's nothing more to do than sit back and enjoy the ride!
I can't say if I've ever seen a chair like this before. Highly unusual
ReplyDeleteI read about Ilmari Tapiovaara when I was trying to identify the little rope-back rocker recently and found a photo of him surrounded by his chairs. This lounge chair, along with its square pedestal base sibling, were among the pieces shown. His style was quite varied, and he seemed to be influenced by several of the well-known chair designers of the time.
