Black and white

After what seems like an eternity, we've finally managed to lay our hands on an original model 420C side chair by Harry Bertoia. We didn't plump for a shiny new chair from a fancy shop, oh no! Rather, we decided to rescue this forlorn and generally unloved looking chair which, as you can see, is in desperate need of some TLC. This baby has, at some point, been sprayed white and sadly left to go a little rusty around the edges. But with the 'new' paintwork chipped in places, there are small glimpses here and there of the original black vinyl-coated finish.

With its cocoon-like back and long tapered legs, this nondescript 'cocktail' chair has a shape that just delights.

Last week two threes, this week two fours - and the angular bent ply arms on this pair of No. 506 armchairs by Cor Alons are quite mesmerising, very mesmerising ..... completely mesmerising!

Ones and twos

We were kindly invited to a private viewing of Cavaliero Finn's Spring Fair which took place in their home-cum-gallery over the weekend. With a host of delights on display, it was the work of furniture designer Alexena Cayless that we were most eager to see in the flesh. The design of Alexena's Cheaney Chair is inspired by the traditional skills and materials of shoemakers and saddlery companies. The chair, an upcycled G Plan dining chair, has been reupholstered with leather brogue patterns hand-crafted by Cheaney Shoes in Northamptonshire and Scottish Tweed.

Untraditional

The fabric in this 1954 advertisement for Herman Miller reminded us of linen scrim, a fine yet incredibly strong open weave material traditionally used by upholsterers - or used by traditional upholsters - to cover stuffings in preparation for stitching. We can't imagine that Herman Miller use a great deal of linen scrim in the construction of their chairs, but hey, we're not experts!
